Description
Quality mathematics and social justice in mathematics teaching are imperative if we are to “promote and provide appropriate mathematics experiences for students.” But, what is social justice in mathematics education? How can we be assured that classrooms are socially just?

Participants will be actively engaged in activities to promote understanding and critical conversations about social justice as it pertains to the effective teaching and learning of mathematics. Opportunities will be given to examine policies, practices, views, language and instruction in mathematics education.
Specifically, participants will
· develop a foundational understanding of social justice in mathematics education
· identify/recognize inequities in mathematics education
· examine personal beliefs and pedagogical beliefs and practices
· recognize and reframe deficit thinking and beliefs
· examine policies and practices in curriculum, instruction and assessment
· consider classroom culture · examine instruction for characteristics of social justice · plan to act on aspects of social justice in mathematics
· be prepared to have critical conversations with several aspects of social justice with colleagues and other stakeholders.

Nora G. Ramirez is a nationally known mathematics educator who has spent over 30 years collaborating with teachers. She has been a middle school teacher, a high school teacher, a professional development director, a mathematics specialist and an author. Nora is a founding member and past-president of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL and is currently its Executive Secretary.
